3 tips to cultivate a talent mindset

What does your neighbour, your uber driver and your barista have in common?

They could be your next hire.

Let’s face it – business leaders have plenty of challenges to face as it is, running around filling positions at short notice shouldn’t be one of them.

Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be.

How? A simple shift in thought process. We’ll let you in on an industry secret… Cultivate an ‘always on’ hiring mindset.

There’s a myriad of stellar reasons for doing this – staying two steps ahead of the competition, maintaining team motivation, boosting corporate culture but importantly for growing businesses, it means never having to compromise on a hire.

By consistently keeping recruiting at the forefront of your mind, you can cultivate leads and nurture relationships to ensure that potential candidates are readily available – prior to the hiring process. It means that when the time comes to get someone in that seat, and quickly, there’s a handful of leads who are already engaged in the business to progress.

An ‘Always On’ talent mindset is a term we learned from our interview with Nadine of TQSolutions. We sat down as a team and identified the low hanging fruit for an ‘Always On’ mindset. Here are three easy steps to get started:

  1. Never stop networking: continually expanding your contacts opens doors to an array of talent opportunities as your business expands. And you don’t have to go to events every night making friends over canapes, it can be as simple as expanding networks across LinkedIn. In doing so, you’ll start building a little black book of the best talent out there, while also making you more noticeable as a workplace.
  1. Create a cultivating culture: don’t think the ‘always on’ hiring mindset needs to rest solely with you as a business leader. It’s something you can be nurturing within the team culture. Encourage your team to always think of the people they meet as a next potential colleague. Make sure they’re out and about engaging and flying the company flag, as well as spotlighting talent they meet who are doing great things and might be one to watch.
  1. Leverage tech to do the leg work: talent sourcing technology takes the time and effort out of finding the right people to nurture relationships with. It will transform the recruiting hiring experience, supercharge your talent team’s capacity and be the proactive push that keeps an ‘always on’ hiring approach ticking as part of your growth strategy. Technology can transform your approach by building a scalable engine that supports you as you grow. We may be biased, but that sounds like a no brainer.

It is essential that business leaders are constantly living and breathing an ‘always on’ hiring mindset and surrounding themselves with quality candidates. Activating this mindset means you can rest assured knowing that you won’t have to compromise on your most important asset – your team.

As a leader, it also builds trust in your company culture – your people are entrusted with engaging with potential hires and getting involved with the hiring process.

Remember, an ‘always on’ mindset starts with action; make connections, get your team on board and start leveraging tech in sourcing candidates.
